About the Design
We found Bigfoot! The Story.
In 1810, John Jacob Astor founded the Pacific Fur Company. Astor, the Jeff Bezos (Amazon.com's Founder) of the time, was a rather wealthy man to say the least. The PFC's goal was to capitalize on the great abundant, natural resources that had not yet been tapped in the Pacific Northwest of America.
During this time in history, the United States called this region Oregon Country, while England called it the Columbia District. Modern day times, this area of land is British Columbia, Canada, and Washington and Oregon States of the United States.
Astor founded the Pacific Fur Company by creating 100 shares and selling off 50 shares at $2000 USD each to investors. The Dollar size Bigfoot coin celebrates this history by imagining Astor gave each of his backers a "share holder token" featuring the iconic cryptozoological creature of the forest: Bigfoot. At that time in history, legends and stories were told of various watchers and creatures in the wilderness and perhaps the legends of Bigfoot were already spreading!
The Dollar sized Bigfoot coin fictitiously marks the founding of the Pacific Fur Company in 1810 on the front with the silhouette of Bigfoot. The reverse side shows a mysterious footprint "proving" the creature's existence, John Jacob Astor's initials, and a illustrative value of 1 share.
Life was tough, and while Astor would go on to have many successful businesses, the difficulties of moving furs and other harvested goods across North America before the transcontinental railroad and other good transportation left the Pacific Fur Company defunct by 1813.
Our Bigfoot Half Dollar Coins are set a few years later. These coin celebrate the Treaty of 1818 where, among other things, both England and the United States agreed to peacefully rule over this Pacific region at the same time! With the bloody revolutionary war still in recent memory, there would be no fighting over control of this territory.
The two countries would allow the harvest of resources simultaneously and so why not mint a coin together?
You've heard of a double sized coin, what about a dual country coin? The heads side (or is it heads?) of the coin reads Oregon Country and has a very American motif: the star spangled shield with a rack of moose antlers, bold and modern for the time, fit for a young, pioneering country. The value is One Cent, an American currency amount.*
The tails side (or is it tails?) states Columbia District. Around St. George's Cross are four of the resources found in the area: Maple Leaf Timber, Pacific Salmon, Raccoon Fur (Is that a magician's spring raccoon?), and Sasquatch! The value is 1/2 Penny, a British currency amount.*
Both coins feature edge lettering.
Historically around this time, before reeded edges became standard, coins would be minted with text around the rim. This preserved the actual value of precious metal coins. If a thief were to shave down the coin and skim some of the valuable metal to keep for himself, it would be very obvious that the coin had lost some value because the lettering had disappeared. The text helped assure coins remained whole and not "shaved".
Around the Dollar sized Bigfoot Coin you can read: "New York City * Fort Astoria". NYC is where Astor directed the Pacific Fur Company and Fort Astoria was the headquarters in the Northwest corner of the continent.
Around the Half Dollar Coin you can read in Latin: "E Pluribus Unum" (One out of many), words of the New Republic and in French: "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (shame on him who thinks evil of it.), words of the Monarch.
Footnotes
*Please Note: These coins are historical fiction and have no monetary value. They do not claim backing by any corporation or global government present or past. They do not have official country names and lack key text to be official currency. There is no cash value.
THESE COINS WILL TARNISH. Unlike other Copeland Coins brand coins, we have intentionally put a very light coating on these coins that will allow them to age and patina like real historical currency.
Each coin is hand groomed to have small variations and the appearance of light circulation in the real world. For this reason each coin will have small, intentional variances in color. Coins purchased in sets are matched to look the same.
